The Romanian government has increased the quota for newly hired foreign workers by 10,000 after businesses in the country again requested additional staff, the labor ministry said. The decision was made in late August.
"The supplement to the quota was adopted after the number of work permits issued increased by more than 165% in the first eight months of 2019 compared to the first half of last year," the ministry explained.
From 1 January to 23 August, a total of 19,173 applications for work by foreigners were registered in Romania, 16,540 permits were issued, 818 were rejected and 1,884 are pending.
About 11,000 are foreign workers employed in Romania in the first half of 2019.
